Child Support Enforcement and Paternity Issues

At common law, a putative or alleged father of a child produced out of wedlock had no duty to support that child. However, the statutory law changed the common law and required both parents to support the child.

Establishment of a Guardianship

A guardianship is a legal right given to an individual to be responsible for the care, housing, and basic necessities of another individual, commonly referred to as the ward, who is deemed incapable or unable to care for themselves.

Same-Sex Marriages

A same-sex marriage is defined as a marriage between two individuals of the same gender. The issue of same-sex marriages is a hotly debated topic. In the most recent election in the United States, more than ten states voted to amend their state constitution's and define a marriage as a union between a man and a woman. Most other nations do not recognize same-sex marriages as legally valid, nor do they allow them to occur.

Gifts to Grandchildren

Many grandparents want to give their grandchildren gifts. Giving gifts to grandchildren is also advantageous for the grandparents' estate because it may reduce the overall size of the estate and lower the estate tax burden.

Traditional and Gestational Surrogacy

The two types of surrogacy are "traditional" and "gestational." Traditional surrogacy is done via artificial insemination, with the surrogate using her egg and another man's sperm. Gestational surrogacy is done via In Vitro Fertilization (IVF), where fertilized eggs from another woman are implanted into the surrogate's uterus. Choosing which route to take is one of the earliest decisions a surrogate or intended parents must make.
